The real beginning of almost every painting is a great sketch, I'm a big fan of a good sketch it really strips the artist to the bare-bones and shows how talented he really is and show his foundation to a great painting. I almost never show my sketches for that same purpose I see so many of my fellow artists killing it way more advance than my sketches, but like all things no one really knows you until they see it all.
